The (intentional) difficulty with basic math is only a symptom. If they accept the math, they accept that it's over. It can't be over because they've been told that Bernie can't lose because Hillary is such a weak candidate. The math proves that assertion is demonstrably false - if she was so weak, she wouldn't be ~3m votes ahead. Repeat. It's like a cascade effect.
