3. I've worked on lots of campaigns, and the word "debate" always generates headlines.

Those who are bad at debating never want more debates, but they don't want to be accused of dodging said debates. They always try to come up with a reason to decline invitations to more debates, in order to avoid being called debate dodgers. Both Trump and Sanders are now those debate dodgers.

The media always carries stories about debates, and you don't ever want to be the candidate who appears too cowardly to debate your opponents any time and any place. Good debate press is always available to those candidates who know how to get it.

And this phenomenon is centuries old. Can you imagine the furor if either Lincoln or Douglas had not been willing to face the other in a debate?
