Hillary Clinton
In reply to the discussion: Giving out F*** buttons at a rally [View all]I'm a millenial (I think...is 1989 millenial?). I, and the large majority of
people I know +/- 4 or so years of me never seemed to have that kind
of attitude. I think it's an unfair characterization, not really what is
leading to Bernie supporting. If anything, most of Bernie's support
comes from relatively well off youth.
I've been just as opposed to young people characterizing boomers
the same way ("The boomers, they got theirs, and now they don't
want to share./They screwed up the country." etc). I think the
majority of it both ways is just...intergenerational rivalry.
I have met people like the above, and yeah, they mostly love Bernie.
My major problem isn't that Bernie draws people like that, but that
Bernie makes promises that can't realistically be kept...not at the
moment, at least. As to why those that get drawn in by that seem
to be largely youth (though, remember, a lot of old, hippy boomers
love him too), I think it's because their mix of youthful (perhaps)
unrealistic optimism and their general lack of life experience...
particularly regarding politics.
My first election was in 2008, and I admit, while I felt pretty
knowledgeable about politics and history, not all the reasons
I voted for Obama were necessarily solidly founded. Not that
future, more knowledgeable me would have voted otherwise,
but I certainly had a few youthful illusions.
