Venezuelans stranded in Colombia after border shutdown ahead of vote [View all]

The action was taken without prior notice by the authorities

Ahead of the presidential vote to be held next April 14, Venezuelan authorities early on Tuesday closed the Venezuela-Colombia border without prior notice.

In previous ballots, the border was closed 48 hours prior to the election. However, in the gubernatorial vote held last December 16, the border was closed on December 12.

Last week, César Pérez Vivas, the former governor of Táchira state, west Venezuela, and member of opposition electoral campaign team Simón Bolívar in the region, requested the National Electoral Council (CNE) to bring back to normal the date the border is supposed to be closed. The request sought to avoid discomfort and losses to the local community.

"Some people work in Colombia, but their homes are in Venezuela. Whenever the border is closed as it has been done lately, that is, suddenly, without prior notice, thus restraining the access to the Republic to vote or to be at home, there is a violation of a fundamental human right," the former governor stated.
