Electoral body denies audit under the terms requested by dissenters [View all]

The National Electoral Council (CNE) decided at a meeting of its board of directors to conduct on May 6-June 4 an audit on the presidential election of April 14. The audit will encompass a a random sample of ballot boxes from the 46% of voting stations that were not audited on the Election Day, said CNE president Tibisay Lucena, adding that the sample will be drawn during a meeting with experts representing the relevant political parties.

"After a long analysis at the National Electoral Council, we found that it is impossible to approve the application (filed by opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles) on the terms proposed, as they are not provided for under the law. Nevertheless, the Electoral Branch, in search of a route to the reconciliation, proposed stakeholders to expand the last audit left to complete the schedule of a vote that is over," said Lucena.
