WASHINGTON Citing Cuba's human rights record and refusal to turn over fugitives, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio warned on Monday that he would oppose anyone nominated to become the U.S. ambassador to the island nation..
Rubio's warning protests the Obama administration's removal of Cuba from the U.S. list of "state sponsors of terrorism" and its attempt to establish normal diplomatic relations without making demands.
The Republican presidential candidate and other critics say President Barack Obama has gotten nothing in return for his outreach to Cuba, while lending legitimacy to the Castro regime.
"Despite more than five months of discussions with the Cuban government, I am very concerned about the lack of political reforms and progress on human rights, the continued harboring of known terrorists and other fugitives from U.S. justice, the outstanding American property claims and judgments against the Cuban government, and the limitations that continue to be placed on American diplomats working in Havana," Rubio wrote in a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry.
