Well, you're justified in being alert to unfair standards, but at the end of the day it boils down to the import of "considered by some to be the only real threat to Hillary Clinton". I can see it as being awkwardly inserted, and not totally relevant, but it's not a lie (though arguably misleading). And it wasn't followed by, or preceded by, anything else remotely derogatory to Sanders. As I mentioned, the piece did go on to say that O'Malley was joining Sanders in being prominent. That acknowledges Sanders being senior in prominence.

It's a piece for an online magazine (Salon). It has to grab the reader. It was actually chock full of source material, so while it was opinionated, it was a few cuts above the run of the mill opinion pieces that try (and fail) to pass themselves off as worthy of consideration.
