That would be his mother, poor woman. She and her husband, Isaac (both close to 80), were once prosperous small industrialists who owned a home fabrics line. It went under, I believe, as a result of "free trade" policies during the last dictatorship (as did many small and medium industries, even some large ones).

Their family patriarch, Boris Garfunkel, fled Ukraine during one of the Tzar's pogroms in 1891.
