Ecuador's Moreno takes office vowing to heal divisions [View all]

Lenin Moreno was sworn in as Ecuador's president on Wednesday, promising to try and heal divisions stirred by a decade of polarizing leftist rule.

Moreno, 64, assumed the presidency during a ceremony in Ecuador's congress before some 12 heads of state from around Latin America.

His cabinet, announced Tuesday after weeks of backdoor haggling inside the ruling party, seeks to follow through on his campaign pledge to open up a dialogue with the private sector that was largely shunned by his predecessor and political mentor Rafael Correa, who surrounded himself with ideological loyalists.

Moreno is the first disabled individual to take office as president of Ecuador. He became paraplegic after being shot in the back after being robbed in 1998.
