What visitors to the area saw before the archeologists started carefully excavating was simply a stretch of dirt, apparently!

People only saw what was above ground, and everything was covered by dirt:

The horrendous effort, the love of beauty, design, the amazing respect for their work which the laborers put into constructing this other-wordly city, the largest adobe city in the world, simply leaves a person confounded. Clearly these people weren't out to pursue profit over quality, they were no Trumps. They actually saw a higher purpose to their work than is ever spotted in the same world in the present.

What does it mean?

Thank you to the great DU'ers who took the time to think this over. I appreciate your time, so much.
