1. Henry Louis Gates visited Brazil and interviewed a group of people who were of various

.......racial mixtures; white, black, asian, and indigenous. Asked who in the group was "black", they identified what seemed to Gates as a seemingly random group from their number. "He's black, and he's not and I'm black and he's not" sort of thing. The darkest skinned among them, to Gates an obvious black man, was said not to be black, while another relatively light skinned person was, by consensus, said to be black. Gates explained that race in Brazil is so convoluted that it should be meaningless, but Brazilians had their own standards. I have to wonder how this might affect "Black Consciousness Day" in Brazil.
