Herd immunity is NOT possible without vaccines. Otherwise, herd immunity would have come in to play with things like smallpox, or measles. Yes, the immunity you get from having a particular disease and recovering is almost always permanent, while vaccine immunity can sometimes wear off. But far more people can be vaccinated, thus achieving immunity, than typically get the disease within a community.
