LIMA — An archaeological site in the midst of Peru's bustling capital has yielded yet another pre-Inca prize, an undisturbed Wari tomb containing two corpses wrapped in ceremonial fabric, scientists said Thursday.

The tomb, estimated to be more than 1,000 years old, was found at the Pucllana archaeological site in Lima. It contained the bodies of an adult and an infant, along with nearly 10 intact artifacts.

The adult was probably a master weaver, said Isabel Flores, an archaeologist at Pucllana. The infant, she added, was probably killed and buried in the tomb as an offering in the adult's honor. "When we unwrap the bodies, we will be able to determine the adult's age, position in society and gender," said Flores.

The Wari civilization was active in an area that now contains Lima from approximately the year 600 to 1000, about 500 years before the Inca empire emerged. Seventy Wari tombs have been unearthed at the Pucllana site, which is nestled in a residential neighborhood in central Lima.

Archaeologists in Peru have unearthed a royal tomb with treasures and mummified women from about 1,200 years ago.

The discovery north of Lima could shed new light on the Wari empire, which ruled in the Andes before the rise of the better-known Inca civilisation.

More than 60 skeletons were inside the tomb, including three Wari queens buried with gold and silver jewellery and brilliantly-painted ceramics.

Many mummified bodies were found sitting upright - indicating royalty.

The archaeologists say the tomb was found in El Castillo de Huarmey, about 280km (175 miles) north of Lima.

Archaeologists discover Incan tomb in Peru

LIMA: Peruvian archaeologists discovered an Incan tomb in the north of the country where an elite member of the pre-Columbian empire was buried, one of the investigators announced Friday.

The discovery was made on the Mata Indio dig site in the northern Lambayeque region, archaeologist Luis Chero told state news agency Andina.

Archaeologists believe the tomb belonged to a noble Inca based on the presence of “spondylus,” a type of sea shell always present in the graves of important figures from the Incan period, which lasted from the 12th to the 16th centuries.

The tomb had been broken into multiple times, possibly in search of treasure. But despite evidence of looting, archaeologists recovered items including vases.
The tomb also had unique architecture including hollows for the placement of idols.

Archaeologists in Peru have said a mummy unearthed on the outskirts of the capital Lima could be between 800 and 1,200 years old.

The mummy was found in a burial chamber about three metres (10 feet) long and 1.4 metres (4.5 feet) deep in Cajamarquilla, which is about 24km (14.9 miles) east of Lima.

It appears to be the remains of a man who was aged about 18 to 22 years old when he died. The body was discovered bound with a rope, with the hands covering the face.

Archaeologist Pieter Van Dalen, the head of the excavation project conducted by National Major San Marcos University, called the discovery “peculiar and unique”.

“The mummy would have been buried sometime between 800 and 1200 AD,” he said.

It seems Peru has so much history covered by earth, highways, new buildings they should demand a huge time out to try to take stock and determine what areas should be left completely intact until they can be investigated! Some of the constructions we've seen and imagined were all Inca building were actually built before Incas added new construction on top of them, and you can see clearly the difference in the way the stones were placed. Overwhelming.

Thanks for your comments. When I went to look for more, it was easy to see there are tons of articles already to keep a person busy reading for a long time!

It's about time Caucasian cultures started realizing how complex and accomplished the Native citizens of the Americas were before they were invaded and slaughtered!
