2. Thank you, Judi. It was quite the cliffhanger - which made the outcome all that much more exciting.

Not everyone here shared your good vibes. Some reacted badly to the news, many seeming to go on preconceptions.

But politically, this was very good news to anyone not a Republican (or a right-winger generally).

Trump's pal Macri, as you know, is trying to weasel his way back into office.

President Fernández, in turn, faces an uphill battle for re-election - all the more since Cristina Kirchner will not be running for either the presidency, or even staying on as Fernández's running-mate.

Going by the 2021 mid-terms, the RW opposition didn't gain any votes from their (poor) 2019 showing - but 4 million Fernández voters stayed home. It remains to be seen if the President can persuade enough to come back to the polls this October.

This World Cup victory - which up to now seemed impossible to many in Argentina (and elsewhere) - helps. We'll see.
