2. Sad but true. It's the Trump/McConnell dream judiciary come true (at least where it matters)

Most, if not all, the key courthouses co-opted by a right-wing good ole boys network (and a few girls).

These chats really drove that point home - though prosecutions are very unlikely. RW media, predictably, have largely ignored the scandal - and are just waiting for a friendly judge to dismiss the case.

And because in Argentina a president needs two-thirds approval from the Senate (plus the Council of Magistrates) to both remove and appoint federal judges, Fernández has has very few opportunities to change any of it.

Consequently, the Videla fan club has been trying to rule by judicial fiat every chance they get - going so far as to use the Supreme Court to restore prior legislation that was more to their liking (thus paralyzing the Council of Magistrates) and even setting revenue sharing percentages (!).

The way they see it, the only democratic piece left to fall is the president himself - who they believe they can easily defeat next year, now that Mrs. Kirchner won't be running (or even be on the ticket as VP candidate).

As you pointed out, it's the same strategy right-wingers have used in other Latin American countries (with some variations): the institutional coup - judicial or legislative. Lula, as president, will have to tread very carefully (as Castillo could tell him).

That said, a very Happy New Year to you too Judi! All the Best for 2023 to you and yours. Blessings always.
