I’ve spent my whole life in two places that are tourist magnets (Hawai’i and Santa Barbara) . Past college I never worked in the tourist industry, but my first husband worked at the Ilikai Hotel throughout our marriage, was in the union, paid into a pension, got great medical care with Kaiser for me and the 2 babies — and knew that February’s customers were Canadian.

Why would anybody in their right mind come back to a place where they were “detained” by ICE, looked down on by the locals, and just by turning on the TV could see the national government was turning fascist and literally trying to wall off the rest of the world?

Never lived in Florida, but visited an old friend there a couple of times. We’re grandmas now, but met at the University of Hawai’i , having both grown up there.
