The US economy grew 2.8 per cent in the final three months of 2011 as consumers ramped up spending and businesses boosted production.
The commerce departments initial reading of gross domestic product growth in the fourth quarter missed economists expectations of a 3 per cent annualised pace, following the third quarters tepid 1.8 per cent increase.
