I have an on-again off-again dialogue with several of my former colleagues. We're all retired now, and many have moved to other states. I sent your blog piece to them and one guy's response fits in exactly with what you're saying:

"Teachers in many blue states are doing well enough that there will never be meaningful "job actions". They have too much to lose. The answer is politics and public relations and that ain't easy or cheap."

In some ways, we've become the victims of our own success. When teachers were earning $5-6,000 a year they really didn't have that much to lose. But I think there's a broader reason here. As a society we have become fat (literally) and lazy. Calls to action tend to fall on mostly deaf ears, witness the OWS movement. Maybe this is just an old geezer pining for the past, but it seems to me that there just isn't as much 'juice' as there used to be.

Anyway, feel free to use any of my ramblings on your blog. If you like I'll pass on snippets from my buddies that seem germane. Good luck with organizing. It's far and away the most satisfying activity I've ever been involved in.
