If they are faced with facts that denial disappears. If one thing that protected them from knowledge and therefore reality is challenged, they are lost.
Idols with feet of clay that crumble before them are hard to deny and therefore they are left with no coping mechanism. It would be a good time to bombard them with quotes from Ronald Reagan about immigration and guns. They might meltdown. It would be fun to watch, but then rational people could offer support.
A large dose of actual labor history is in order.
