October 12 (Renewables Now) - About 8% of the US’ power last year came from wind and solar parks, including small-scale photovoltaic (PV) facilities, show statistics by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).

According to data released on Thursday, wind and solar generation combined reached or exceeded 20% of the total power production in 10 states. Of the 10 states with the highest share of wind and solar generation, wind takes the lead in almost all of them.

Iowa was at the top of the ranking last year with annual wind and solar generation of 37%, including 36.8% of wind and 0.2% of solar. In some states, however, such as California, Nevada, Massachusetts and Arizona, solar outpaced wind. Solar power production in California, for example, stood at 15.6%, against 6.4% for wind.

During some months, wind accounted for over 50% of in-state electricity generation in Iowa and Kansas, while solar was responsible for over 20% of in-state power production in California.
