3. there's a bit of truth in the need to "clean" the forest floors

Before white man settled the west, and before white man started suppressing fires, fires used to keep the landscape in balance. The forest floor would be kept "clean" by the occasional fire that passed through. Trees would flourish above the occasional wildfire that passed through, and the burned groundcover would replenish the forest floor.
