Any space colonies that want to become permanent will have to be sustainable from the start because there will be no environmental support systems to draw from (we are not adapted to those environments, so humans will always be 'contained' by resource limits except for brief growth periods when advancing technology can create a bit more abundance).

My point is that it doesn't make much sense to send people to colonize the solar system if we can't do things sustainably for the Earth.
