2. we live in the west valley and lost AC for two July days a couple years ago

It was miserable, but we still had refrigeration, ice, fans, and tap water, so it wasn't life threatening (although cool water from the tap is impossible in mid-summer, it comes out bathtub warm). Summer temperatures here can easily be deadly.
