this morning, Thursday, there were numerous reports that they were gone. According to the village mayor, the new moon brought a shift in current and the ice opened up and they made a break for open water! The villagers were preparing to go out and make new holes in the ice for them for as long as they could, while waiting for the possibility that an ice breaker could come and help. though the nearest one was said to be ten days away.

I have been in a several month long deeply spiritual program, for personal reasons, and this had me so upset that I stayed up late praying for them to somehow be spared the horrible death they faced, that somehow the water would open up for them... I'm sure I was not alone in praying and chanting for them but I think that all the prayers and chanting may have had something to do with it. I hope they made it to safety and are able to get out of the bay.

I read one story that said that a pod of Orcas were trapped in ice near Japan a few years back and they didn't survive. These villagers were quite ready to go out there and keep breathing holes open for the duration, some mentioned that they considered making holes along a route to the sea if they had to. I heard about the movie that was made about the Grey Whales that were trapped in the north Pacific. I hope I never hear about another pod of these magnificent beings having such problems. It's not like there are enough of them in the first place.

I hope to hear in weeks to come that they made it to open water safely and the whole pod intact. Won't know until someone spots them again. Meanwhile, I'll still chant and pray for them.
