In reply to the discussion: Fukushima is Heating Pacific Ocean [View all]FBaggins
(28,678 posts)You have to remember that the sites where this type of nonsense originates are the home of the TFB (Tinfoil Hat Brigade). Government mind control rays, UFOs everywhere, the Jews used a secret new type of nuclear weapon off of Japan to create the earthquake in the first place. You name it.
I just went six rounds with someone else on this nonsense... and the OPer clearly saw it (because he posted there before he posted this).
To summarize:
I did a simple calculation. All openly available conversions and definitions of terms... and the simplest arithmetic. It would take about 65 years for three operating Fukushima cores to produce enough heat to warm up even a tiny fraction of the water that's involved. There isn't enough heat being produced by many orders of magnitude for this to be the source of the anomaly.
I pointed out (as RobertEarl does here) that "Heating water up" is what reactors do. There are lots of operating reactors that dump 2/3 of their heat right into the ocean all the time. Where are all of those plumes?
I explained what the actual cause of the anomaly was and showed prior years of the same data showing the effect.
Based on those prior years' data, I predicted that if he could look closer than the scale of this animation, he would see that the "plume" does not originate at Fukushima, but miles off the coast. This is because the collision of the Kuroshio/Oyashio currents tend to leave back eddies closer to the shore.
Then I showed images like the one below proving that prediction true. The water directly off Fukushima is actually cooler than the rest.

Do you think any of this made the slightest bit of difference? Of course not... because the woo woo is strong with them.
An embarrassment to anti-nukes everywhere (and DUers in general).
