[font size=3]Volkswagen has staged the world debut of their Golf SportWagen HyMotion research vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Looking virtually identical to the standard model, the HyMotion features a hydrogen fuel cell that powers a 134 bhp (100 kW) electric motor. This enables the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 10.0 seconds.

Speaking of performance, the GS HyMotion has a lithium-ion battery that stores kinetic energy recovered from the car's regenerative braking system. This energy is used in the "starting phase of the fuel cell and adds a dynamic boost to the maximum acceleration of the Golf SportWagen."

The hydrogen is stored in four carbon-fiber tanks that are located underneath the body. This enables themodel to travel up to 310 miles (499 km) on a single fill up. When the tanks are empty, they can be refilled in approximately three minutes.
