1. It's about time somebody did

but I don't see much hope for it, considering the arrogance of power and a lack of willingness to do the hard work of deep meditation the philosophy demands.

It seems more likely they want to adopt the surface attributes of folk religion that has grown up around some Buddhist disciplines. While that's probably an improvement over some of the stuff out there, it's unlikely to effect substantive changes over time.
