1. I went frugal because of need and not by choice.

I didn't feel embarrassed about it. What made me feel good was that every night I was able to go to sleep without worrying about how I was going to pay the bills. While I often didn't have much more then pocket change for spending money, the basics were covered. And for that, I was quite thankful.
