The Trump administration and Amtrak announced a master developer team to lead the redesign and construction to expand New York Penn Station, the busiest transportation hub in North America.
"We are one step closer to delivering a world-class travel hub that daily commuters and travelers have dreamed of for decades," said Sean Duffy, the secretary for the U.S. Department of Transportation, in a statement. "Under President Trumps historic leadership, the days of Penn Stations cramped hallways, broken infrastructure and snarled rail lines are numbered.
The joint venture of Skanska and Halmar International, which has a local headquarters in Nanuet, New York, was chosen from three bidders to reimagine the 34th Street station that is home to multiple subway lines, Amtrak, NJ Transit, Long Island Rail Road and eventually Metro-North trains. Halmar is the construction arm of ASTM North America, a design and architecture firm that submitted a Penn Station makeover proposal in 2023. Skanska was the contractor on the Portal North Bridge project.
