The US in particular has had eight months to build up troops and infrastructure all the way across the NATO border. A nuclear attack in Ukraine is a tripwire at this point, and would represent an escalation that would need to be met swiftly and decisively. It would not be met by a corresponding nuclear response, but it would be very nearly as painful for Russia. I don't see there really being any other alternative.
