First you need to understand the russian mentality with regards to the Soviet Union.
To them, the Soviet Union was the russian empire. Every single territory of the Soviet Union WAS Russia, even though the population consisted of dozens of non-russian ethnicities.

So when the Soviet Union was split up into various countries, the other ethnicities saw this as their chance at independence, but the Russians saw it as a hostile foreign power breaking their country into pieces. And the Russians still hold a grudge against these other ethnicities for "betraying" Russia and STAYING independent instead of immediately and happily returning under Russia's rule.

And this fear/trauma is still alive today, with a very popular conspiracy-theory being that the West wants to break up the Russian Federation into smaller countries, just like they did with the Soviet Union.



So, when Medvedjev predicts that the EU will collapse... when he predicts that Germany will turn itself into the Fourth Reich and invade neighbouring countries like Poland... when he predicts that France will declare war on Germany...
