It took them 15 years to finally control Chechnya. They lost over 100,000 troops combined in Afghanistan and Chechnya fighting mostly against local insurgents but Ukraine is modern meat grinding conventional warfare. It's being fought using new technologies like drones and robots and AI enhanced command and control software being used along with better communication systems and more destructive weapons.
