I think of the basis of most -isms as power and prejudice. LGBT people have no societal power over straight people, and they're certainly not wielding that power to discriminate them.

The problem is that some of straight people (albeit fewer than in years past) feel that it is their right to outwardly be hostile to a group just because they don't like them. And, when they are now told that it is no longer socially acceptable to be outwardly hostile to LGBTers, they cry foul and cling to "heterophobia".


I think you hit the nail on the head, there. It's the new version of "why aren't you tolerating my intolerance".
