I was on a travel job gig in western Arizona at the time. There was a new Starbuck's knock-off place had opened with much fanfare about "supporting local business". Even more encouragement was given to patronize this place as the owners were local fire fighting personnel who opened this place. But my first visit to this place was a total turn-off:
Even walking in the door, there was a line of folks waiting to make their coffee order. I was already a bit taken aback by the HUGE screen teevee overpowering a relatively small seating area.... blaring FOX NEWS at everyone. There was also no reading material anywhere, except... two pamphlets on the coffee tables in front of the overdemonstrative teevee.
One was a ridiculous anti-abortion pamphlet, complete with pictures of bloody full-term fetuses. Already suspect.
The other made my blood boil. It was predicting that soon scientists would be able to predict if your unborn baby would turn out gay... so "preventative measures" could be undertaken. Holy Shit, no hypocrisy there.
I was just stunned beyond belief. As I was looking at this shit, the barista signaled that she was ready to take my order.
I simply dropped that fucking thing, said "no thank you" and left forever.
However, before my year's contract was up, in good ol' red-state, brain-dead Arizona, this franchise was opening their second outlet.
This was just over 10 years ago. Arizona's politics was bending even harder hard right, worker's rights were going down the toilet, they'd already de-funded and crippled the state's EOC, I let my licence to practice there expire and will never renew unless the state turns blue and Arpaio is put behind bars to wear the pink underwear and eat stale sandwiches.
