News reports about the roving thugs beating gays in Russia in the lead up to 2014 Winter Olympics. Russia was crawling with reporters from all over the world and he made sure law enforcement ignored the widespread attacks. It endeared him to the rightwing extremists and fundamentalists in America.....just as he calculated.
