A federal appeals court ruled Friday that bans on so-called LGBTQ “conversion therapy” violate the First Amendment.

The widely debunked — and potentially dangerous — practice of attempting to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity has been discredited by nearly every major medical association in the U.S.

It’s also associated with a higher incidence of suicide ideation.

A peer-reviewed journal study published in the American Journal of Public Health in July found that LGBTQ youth who underwent conversion therapy were more than twice as likely to report having attempted suicide and more than 2.5 times as likely to report multiple suicide attempts in the past year.
