Hitler thumped no holy books to bring about his campaign against homosexuals, the physically and mentally infirm and the "lesser races". Hitler PAID the pulipit pounders to keep their noses out of his homicidal and genocidal business.

Stalin went a step further and added religion to the list of activities to be suppressed with violence.

"God's Will" is simply one of the more effective rallying cries when it comes to trying to force one group to behave in accordance with the desires of another. However, it is hardly essential: "They've got oil." is more than sufficient.
