when I had a series of tooth abcesses. It effectively controlled the pain, and I was in absolute agony without it.

And one of my preemie sons was given morphine when he was 1 1/2 days old, when he got a pneumothorax and had to have a chest tube. That was 7 1/2 years ago, and I suppose that now, in this more enlightened era, they would just leave him in agony.
