Crow block party. [View all]
I often throw vegetable or fruit scraps up on my roof for the birds. (We have a couple of raccoon clans that work the area at night, so I don't put out food on the ground.)
Some birds are really specific about what they'll eat but some are buffet aficionados. Crows. From road kill to fresh fish and nuts, they're on board for the ride. Fruits fit the bill, so to speak, as well.
One afternoon I was cleaning out the fridge and had some watermelon that needed to go up on the roof. So I used an ice cream scooper to form golf ball sized snacks to toss up. Didn't take long for the local crows to check them out and have one or two or three...
In a little bit I heard this raucous back and forth from the roof, the trees, the sidewalk, up and down the street. There was dancing. And lots of wing displays, chest bumps and general mayhem.
I checked the watermelon rinds with a sniff and a taste. The melon had fermented. I had opened the first crow dive in the neighborhood....The first crow bar.
All was quiet the next day. Hopefully all got some rest and were fine. Crows are tough birds. Yet, I check the scraps that go up on the roof now.
