Both make commercial and semi-commercial blenders. Both have far more power than your average blender.

I like the Blendtec because they have electronic controls that ramp up the speed of the blender automatically. They are also programmable so that you can save various profiles for various tasks like ramping up slow to medium or high speed, ramping up then alternating between slow and high, etc. They also have a high and low button for manual operation. This makes operation as simple as selecting the preset for you task and leaving the blender alone to finish. This is how professional operations usually do it which is why you see more Blendtec blenders in that setting.

On the older Vitamix blenders you had to do all this manually, which gives you more control, but harder to repeat a given operation. I'm not sure how the newer Vitamix blenders work.

The Blendtec I have is a refurbished commercial model. I've had it for a few years and it still runs like a champ with no issues whatsoever. What I really like about it is it has a plexiglass guard that surrounds it and greatly cuts down on the noise. It also prevents you from slinging food all over the kitchen if you forget to put the lid on.

So if you want to save some money, you might look at used or refurbished. Both Vitamix and Blendtec are built like a tank and most people just aren't going to wear one out.
