8. Venison steaks

We were planning these for last night but other things interfered. One of our neighbors in the Catskills is an avid hunter and he gave us several pounds of his recent bounty. I'm not a hunter but I love good food and these cuts are beautiful.

I'm going to broil the tenderloins to a medium rare finish. The Landlady(!) is making a fresh broccoli soup and the meal will be completed with mashed potatoes and a spring mix salad with cherry tomatoes, slivers of carrots, green peppers and red onion.

Game meats can be hard to come by unless you live in a rural area. They're really quite delicious and nutritious. Up here in the mountains, we can get venison, rabbit various fowl and other unusual meats. In the city, we've found it quite difficult to find them, even in specialty restaurants or butchers. If you've never tried venison or a good rabbit stew, you might search it out and be surprised by how awesome it can be. Bison burgers are great, too, although we don't get them around here.
