20. I can attest to that. We lost our Beagle in a hurricane in Baton Rouge many years ago.

Long, long, looooong before cell phones and the Internet, this was in the mid to late 70s. We were visiting family down there. A (mild) hurricane was coming in when the beagle got to following a scent and we lost her - as you say - in a flash. Like she'd been scooped up by aliens.

This story has a happy ending. After the storm blew past she showed up in the yard again. She was muddy and bedraggled, but perfectly okay and quite happy. This was now maybe 24 hours after she'd gone. We were very happy to have her back, but also very lucky. Beagles are scent dogs and they absolutely will follow their noses.
