In reply to the discussion: My fur baby crossed the rainbow bridge tonight. [View all]LuckyCharms
(17,425 posts)3. It's probably the worst thing in the world ...I'm very sorry.
I've had to put down two sick dogs to date, and I took it harder than I did when some family members have passed.
It is very normal to feel this devastation when your pet dies. I had a long talk with the vet about this because I was trying to get my head around why this hurts so badly. She said that there are 2 reasons:
1) Our pets depend totally on us.
2) We are everything to them, and they give their entire selves to us without expecting anything back from us...that's just how they are wired.
Don't be afraid to let your feelings show...it's a terrible terrible loss, and you need to grieve properly. Most people will understand this. Keep reminding yourself that you did good by your pet...you did good.
