In reply to the discussion: I'm going to lose my dog. [View all]renate
(13,776 posts)It's about a dog who goes blind, and his owner is in despair about it. But with his owner's help, Digger is perfectly happy going for walks. I can't remember the exact wording but the gist of the story has always stuck with me--dogs don't know that it's sad that they're going blind. They adjust and adapt; that's the way dogs are.
It's like dogs that have to have a leg removed because of cancer; they have no idea that it's sad, they just go "okay, this is different, so I'll figure out how to run and play with what I've got."
I'm so sorry about the shock of the diagnosis. Dogs are absolutely extraordinary beings who deserve to only ever have good things happen to them. But he won't be sad; he'll love you just as much as ever and he'll love being loved by you just as much as ever.
