When I was using a regular collar/leash he was pulling me so hard I was afraid it was hurting him. In the past I've used a "choke" collar and a "prong" collar. I think the active principle with those is that the dog slows down to avoid feeling choked or actually being choked.

The gentle leader causes pressure, but it stops when they stop pulling. And the pressure is not on their neck.
