Madoc no doubt misses his companions, even though he doesn't know why they are gone. Since it is now just him and you, he is probably feeling closer to you for company. So he picks up on your moods easily. You perceived sadness in him when you first got him and gave him attention to perk him up. Maybe it's not too much of a stretch to think that he is ready to return the favor. Cats learn from imitation and experience. You came to him when he was sad and now he perceives that you are sad.

It's healthy to focus on what you have, while also letting yourself grieve when you need to. Madoc's need for company will assure that you don't forget what you have.
