13. Calico cats are generally female. . .

. . . It's not the presence of three colors but the combination of three specific colors in a pattern type that has something to do with the double X chromosome.

BTW, it is amazing how much science has been devoted to cat coat colors. There are scholarly discussions on the percentages of pure black cats versus those with a stray white hair or two. (The presence of white hairs saved black cats' lives during the Inquisition thus altering genetic ratios.) Decades ago, I read an article about the effect of WWII on cat coat pattern distribution in Eastern Europe. I wrote an abstract of the article for a school assignment and ended with a flippant comment, "Now we have something else to blame Hitler for", that might get me in hot water today.

Oh, and little Arthur is freakin' ADORABLE. I am allergic to cats and I want to rub his sweet furry form all over my face. Who needs oxygen?
