but it really would take a lot more space than I have. I also wondered if cats would want to play and hang out so close to their litter box.

You are right that the curtain idea would take little cost or effort, and would not take extra space. I really should do something, since the litter box is just sitting in a corner in my formal dining room----which I rarely use, but it is still rather prominent.
