Otherwise, good Democrats would have to spend so much time dealing with a NO-WIN issue and lessening their chance for holding office. (I believe it was Newtty G, back in the 90s, who allowed the great and grand "assault weapons ban" to actually get to the floor -- just so the Dems could wallow in quicksand to the benefit of the Republicans.)
Might want to take a lesson from that.
