"In army boot camp, the theme was "you are only one color and that is green."
Vitually the same in Parris Island. Our drill intructors would if necessary differentiate by shade of green. In the 1st week, our Forming phase D.I. referred to me as "light green" (white, a black Marine was "dark green"
. At first I didn't have a clue what he was talking about, so I glanced down at my utilities to check if they were a lighter shade that the others. I'm assuming it was that plus the puzzled look on my face that caused the other D.I. watching me to let out a laugh. After it was obvious I didn't understand the reference, the senior D.I. explained it to us.
